Second Conditional Would

  • Use
Conditional are used to talk about real or unreal. Generally, conditional sentences have the word "if". At the same time, use the auxiliary verb "would" to form the conditional in English.

  • Form

Second Conditional

Is used to express an unreal posibility in the present, as wish or dream, or a future action not is likely.

When we talk about conditional sentences should be noted that consist of two sentences.

1 The 'if-clause' that is the phrase that contains the particle 'if'. This phrase indicates the hypothesis or condition.

2 The 'main clause', ie the main sentence. This phrase indicating the result.

  • Affirmative setence
Structure

[If... - Past simple] - [Would - principal verb]

Si ganase la loteria, me compraria una casa.
If i won the lottery, i would buy a house.

Examples:
  1. If the car is cheaper, i would buy it.
  2. If i learnt, i would pass the exam.
  3. If had a broom, all the things i would sweep.

  • Negative sentence
Structure

To make a negative conditional we can use to different structures. The first would be to deny the verbs normally.

Si no ganase la loteria, no compraria una casa
If i didn´t win the lottery, i wouldn´t buy a house.

Examples:
  1. If you didn´t have so much work, you wouldn´t be so serious

  4. If we didn´t study for the exam, we wouldn´t pass the semester.
  5. If i didn´t arrive early, i wouldn´t buy the tickets.

However, we can also use "unless" followed by the verb in the affirmative, with the same meaning.

Si no ganase la loteria, no me compraria una casa.

Unless i won the lottery, i wouldn´t buy the lottery.

Examples:

  1. Unless i bought the food, i wouldn´t eat.
  2. Unless she made her homework, she wouldn´t approve her subject.
  3. Unless i hear music, i wouldn´t dance.
  4. Unless you practice math, you wouldn´t approve the test.
  5. Unless we learnt speak english, we wouldn´t understand the teacher.

*Note: Remember "unless" means "less tan" or "if" so that ir indicates a negative meaning.
