Simple past

  • Use


To express the idea that an action started at specific time in past.

  • Form
To form the simple past regular verbs, add the ending "-ed". The form is the same for all persons (i, you, he, she, it, we, they).

  • Examples:


want - wanted
learn - learned
walk - walked

Exceptions:


  • For verbs that end in an "e", just add -d.

believe - believed
change - chaged


  • If the verb ends in a short vowel and consonant (except "y" o "w" , double the final consonant.
commit - commited
stop - stopped

  • With verbs that end in a consonant and a "y"  change "y" to an "i".
try - tried 
study - studied



  • Affirmative sentences structure
Subject + Verb + ed or irregular verbs

Subject + was or were 

  • Examples

  1. She was a doctor.
  2. I wanted to dance.
  3. They keys were in the table.
  4. We learned English.


  • Negative sentences structure
Subject + did not or didn´t + verb in present + complement

  • Examples
  1. I didn´t want to dance.
  2. She didn´t go to the school.
  3. We didn´t learned English.
  4. They didn´t buy the book,

To make negative sentences with the verb to be in this tense you have tu use:

Subject + wasn´t or weren´t

  • Examples:

  1. She wasn´t a doctor.
  2. They keys weren´t in the table.
  3. We weren´t in 1819.
  4. I wasn´t at home yesterday.
  5. She wasn´t in Miami last Ausgust.

  • Interrogative sentences structure


Was or were + subject + ?

  • Examples:

  1. Was she a doctor?
  2. Was he sad for the broken leg?
  3. Was she sick?
  4. Were you the boy?
  5. Were they behind of me?

Auxiliar verb "to do" (did) + subject + principal verb + ?

  1. Did you go to the school yesterday?
  2. Did she arrive later?
  3. Did he buy the new book?
  4. Did they cook cookies last week?
  5. Did we go to the park last month?
